Open Hearts, Open Minds, Open Doors

Welcome to First UMC!

What to Expect

We are glad you came to our website -- and we'd be even happier if you came and joined us for worship or any of our other program opportunities!
100 different families consider our congregation their home, including families with small children and youth, as well as retirees and people with physical and/or developmental disabilities.  Our church serves as host to the Hiawatha community latch-key program as well as the Happy Days Preschool.
Our families are farmers and teachers, professionals and business owners; they are long term community members and recent "transplants" to the area.
We believe you will find people like yourself here -- and since we believe in diversity, we also know you will find people who will enrich your life.  Come and give us a visit and see what you think!
When you visit us, you will find our doors, our hearts, and our minds are open to you.  We have two worship services every Sunday, at 8:30 and 10:45 AM as well as Sunday School at 9:35 AM.  The Children's Sunday School meets during the school year.  We offer Vacation Bible School during the summer.  There are choirs for people of all ages and interests, including both vocal and hand bell choirs.  We have an elevator to help you move from one level of our building to another, large screens to help people with visual limitations, and a paid nursery attendant for those parents who find it easier to worship without being distracted by busy hands.

Our Heritage

First United Methodist Church has been a part of the Hiawatha community since 1885.  We moved to our current location in 1973 and expanded our facility in 1990 to add more classrooms and an elevator.  We are proud to be a part of the Kansas East Annual Conference of the United Methodist Church, where diversity is welcome and ministry is our priority.
